A couple of the exercises done in a Pattern and Paper workshop I took a few weekends ago.
The instructor gave us time deadlines, "What? You don't have anything glued down yet? Glue something. Five minutes and then put what you have up on the board."
It was fun and kept us from getting too fussy.

This is kind of what I've been doing in my Moleskine. As soon as I start thinking about what I'm doing, I stop.

I really like the second one :)

That's a great rule-of-thumb -- "as soon as I start thinking about what I'm doing, I stop."
It's difficult for me to do. I easily fall into that "fussy" mode and from there slip into being way too self-critical.

Exactly! I feel like the fussy mode puts a stop to any real creativity. What I like most about collage is those surprise moments of sudden connection.

Yes, collage is a great way to work.
On my best days, making collage or any art for that matter, is a bridge between the intuitive and the intellectual.

A good exercise. That bottom piece in particular works well.

Exercise is good for us (me).
Thanks. My classmates thought the bottom piece was (too ?) subtle.

I think they were, too. Yes, of course, in matters of taste . . .

You know, I had to look up de gustibus. I understood the sentiment but not know the actual phrase. Thanks for your contribution.
